1) For which pathologies is RetmarkerDR used for?

RetmarkerDR was developed to help doctors manage retinal diseases, in particular Diabetic Retinopathy (DR). The Difference Analysis module, which is the base of RetmarkerC and is also included in RetmarkerDR, can be used to detect signs related with other retinal diseases such as drusen activity in Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

2) What is the main outcome of using RetmarkerDR?

RetmarkerDR is able to generate important ratios regarding Microaneurysm Turnover (formation and disappearance rates of Microaneurysms), in addition to the detection of differences through time like RetmarkerC.

RetmarkerDR uses our advanced proprietary co-registration algorithm which allows us to properly overlap the colour funds photographs, and complements it with a state-of-the-art Microaneurysm detector to calculate the referred ratios.

The Microaneurysm Turnover is a novel concept, proposed by our Scientific Partner and that is being validated by independent groups in several studies around the world. The concept consists on properly identifying the patients in bigger risk of progression, i.e. the "progressors" to sight threatening stages of the disease.

3) Does RetmarkerDR performs diagnosis?

No! Doctors perform diagnosis and define treatments.

RetmarkerDR provides information to alert to the progression of the disease that might support the doctors’ decisions and allow them to do a better use on their valuable time, focusing in regions of the exams that may need a detailed or even additional examination. RetmarkerDR integrates with the practice workflow, allowing the information to be prepared by the technician operating the funds cameras and reducing the doctors' time to make a decision.

4) Why does Retmarker works with Colour Fundus Photographs? Should I use Mydriatic or Non-Mydriatic Fundus Cameras?

Colour Fundus Photographs are non invasive, thus they are less inconvenient to the patients when compared to exams such as angiographies (FA/ICG). There is a tendency to increase this type of widespread exams for initial screening and monitoring, further complemented by other technologies like OCT.

The most common setting nowadays is Non-Mydriatic cameras but performing pupil dilation to improve quality.

Retmarker solutions were extensively tested with Mydriatic images since this type of images is considered to have higher quality. However it also works with Non-Mydriatic exams but it requires some additional care when choosing the images due to their quality variability.

5) What about Angiographies (FA or ICG)?

Even though Angiography is the gold standard in detection of microaneurysms, it is an invasive exam, not tolerated by all patients, that is why RetmarkerDR uses colour fundus photographs, a non invasive imaging modality easily performed in clinical practice and widely used in a screening context due to its low price and no side effects.

Scientific evidences supported by our scientific partner (see Literature) have shown that colour fundus photographs have a reliable quantification on microaneurysm turnover in the initial stages of Diabetic Retinopathy when compared with Angiography.

6) With which images and conditions does Retmarker work?

Retmarker works with retinographies (colour fundus photographs). Both RetmarkerC and RetmarkerDR were fine-tuned to process 45° and 50° images, centered on the retina’s posterior pole, with the optic disc visible (field 2 images).

The images to be analyzed must comply with the following rules:

  • be from the same patient;
  • be from the same eye;
  • share the same angle definition.

For optimum performance the retinographies should have been taken with the same fundus camera device.

Other conditions/protocol (e.g. 30º images) may be experimented but with more caution when analysing the results.

7) Which file format should be used?

Every fundus camera's software allows the user to export the exams in several image formats. Retmarker was extensively tested with TIF, JPEG, BMP and PNG images (and you should use one of these), though others may work. The minimum size accepted is 768px x 578px. In our labs we have already versions supporting certain DICOM versions.

If you have problems exporting your images to be used by Retmarker, please refer to the fundus camera supplier’s manual.

8) How can I test RetmarkerDR?

We are very interested on allowing you to test our solutions and discuss with you the outcome and relevance of the results, allowing us to constantly improve.

You should start by registering in our website and log in and then you have the following two possibilities:

  • Submit some images according to the protocol. In return we shall send you a report generated in Retmarker with the results;
  • You can also request a free trial license that entitles you to download, install and play around with the software, exploring all its analytical features. Such license is free and allows you to process 20 analysis (different sets of images for a specific patient/eye).

Additionally, we and our distributors are present in the most relevant Scientific Congresses and we are more than happy to walk you through the system.
